U.S. President Donald Trump reported Friday his initial call to new Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was "very productive" and Carney told Trump Canada respects its sovereignty privately and publicly but noted that things have altered in the relationship.
The invitation was prompted by Trump announcing a trade war against Canada and threatening to deploy economic pressure into making Canada the 51st state of America, something which has outraged Canadians. Trump dodged mentioning anything of that nature in his Twitter post and also later in comments in public life. The president of the U.S.

The Liberal government had looked set for a historic election loss this year until Trump invoked a trade war and presumed to challenge Canada's sovereignty. The crisis has bred a surge of patriotism among Canadians, with most Canadians feeling that Carney is the best individual to guide the nation at the moment. Trump had earlier admitted that he had shaken Canadian politics.
